We use fresh dirt in the litter box when kitties first come off the street so they know 'where to go'.  Works like a charm!		Mom was scared and nervous for the first two days but then  started to settle down.  Little boy took his cue from her.
Mom was named "Cassie" and her baby boy was named "Oats"		Curled up in front of the fireplace.  They adore each other
